Star Wars is a series of 6 space opera films that were written and directed by George Lucas. The first film was originally released in 1977, and quickly became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. With the movie's overwhelming success, George was able to create two immediate sequels that were later released at three-year intervals. Sixteen years after the release of the trilogy's final film, the first in a new prequel trilogy of films was released starting in 1999.
